Digital
Esgrafiado
I’ve always loved Esgrafiado, an ancient craft used to decorate traditional facades in some regions of Castilla y León, Spain.
I wanted to bring it into the modern age using digital tools.
First, I had to understand how the mixture of lime and sand are affected by humidity and play around with the ratio of each, to then be able to develop tools using digital fabrication techniques.
I found that tools like Grasshopper - a visual programming language - helped in creating parametric patterns that opened up new possibilities for the mold shapes and material; while a laser cutter greatly sped up the process of creating and upscaling the intricate design.
